THINGS TO KNOW

Going to deepest, darkest Africa can be a little daunting for the uninitiated. But fear not, we are here to answer all your questions and concerns that you may have. Below are some common concerns that you may have:

Do I need a special visa to visit South Africa?

As a US citizen you do not need a visa, just a current passport with at least two blank pages and does not expire within 6-months of arrival in South Africa. For those coming from other countries, please click here.

Do I need any vaccinations?

You should already be up-to-date on all your vaccinations if you attended school in USA. No additional vaccinations are required. The CDC does provide further information and recommendations out of an abundance of caution. Please click here for CDC recommendations.

Should I take anti-malaria medication?

Everyone will recommend taking anti-malaria drugs if going into a malaria area while on safari. Please note that while it is possible, it is unlikely during the month of this tour, that you would be exposed to any malaria-carrying mosquitoes.

Is it safe in South Africa?

Yes! Every precaution is taken to ensure your safety throughout your visit to beautiful South Africa. As with visiting any city in the world, common sense precautions should be taken, to secure your person and property.

How long is the flight?

Well, that's a good one! It's a long flight, and can be up to 18 hours from NYC to Johannesburg should a refueling stop be required (about 15 hours if no stop required). Alternate flights via Europe are the same time but broken up with day visits to glamorous European destinations. Flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town are less than two hours; Cape Town to Hoedspruit approximatey 2 1/2 hours; and Hoedspruit to Johannesburg, a little over an hour.

Will we have internet access while on Safari?

Yes! Isn't that amazing! However, do not rely on a stable nor quick connection. You are in the bush afterall! Wifi is available at the main lodge but not in the tents.

Tents! Did you say, 'tents'!

Beautifully glamorous and luxurious East African tents! And, all tents have their own bathrooms with private, outdoor showers. This is Glamping on steroids!

Do they speak English in South Africa?

South Africa has 11 official languages, and only English is spoken throughout the country.

What will the weather be like?

May is the beginning of winter in South Africa. Cape Town is known for four seasons in one day, but you should expect some rain, cold nights, and pleasant days. Average temperature should range between approximately 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. On Safari, it is dry season. Mornings and evenings are very cold, so layer clothing. Afternoons will be very nice and definitely t-shirt weather (and even nice enough for a dip in the pool). Temperature should range between 40 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit (please note: game drives are in open vehicles, so temperatures feel much colder in the early mornings and late evenings). Click here for average temperatures.

What do I wear?

During May, the weather will tend to the chillier side. Cape town has the potential for being a tad rainy, so a waterproof jacket would be ideal. Jeans are also best during the day. Evening wear: be comfortable and layer clothing for optimum warmth.

On safari, mornings and evening will be bitterly cold, so layer up, bringing items to cover head and hands; ideally, ski clothing that is not bulky and designed in layers would be best. By 9:00 a.m. you could be back to wearing a T-shirt and long pants. Afternoons will be sunny and bright; shorts/skirt and T-shirt will be perfect. Don't forget your swim wear! For your long pants, cotton pants would be best as jean material tends to get very cold. Comfortable walking shoes are best in the Bush, and will work well in Cape Town too.

What is my luggage limit?

You are limited to one suitcase of no more than 50lbs (23kg). Pack on the light side as you'll definitely buy lots of souvenirs (said from experience!!). Don't forget, on Safari, laundry is included, For hand luggage, one carry-on is permitted and one personal item (handbag, computer bag, etc.) totalling a maximum of 10lbs (4.5kg). It is strongly recommended that you only have one small carry-on or personal bag. For FAA recommendations on preparations for flying, please click here

What about money?

Most major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted throughout South Africa, and you typically receive the best exchange rate when using credit or debit cards. American Express and Discover and not as widely used. It is imperative that you call your credit/debit card bank before traveling. ATMs are commonplace, so drawing cash out is simple, and again you'll receive the best exchange rate by using your debit card for cash withdrawals.
